Organic products versus conventional ones

Organic products versus conventional ones

Organic foods are really better for your health.

This is shown by the largest review of published scientific data on organic food.

An international team of researchers from the University of Newcastle in the UK studied 343 peer-reviewed studies comparing organic and conventional crops. They concluded that organic products contain more antioxidants and less toxic heavy metals, and they are much less contaminated with pesticide residues.

Organic product - a certified environmentally friendly product produced without the use of mineral fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, GMOs, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives.

This groundbreaking study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, evaluated the nutrient content of products grown according to organic standards using a systematic review and meta-analysis. The researchers purposefully sought information on the content of polyphenols in foods - that is, the level of organic compounds with recognized antioxidant properties.

They found that, overall, organic foods contained 18 to 69 percent more polyphenols than conventional foods, which is significant given the amazing health benefits of this class of antioxidants. Polyphenols are known to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, including serious cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as cancer.

"Our results are very relevant and meaningful. We hope that they will help both scientists and consumers to put on the shelves the often contradictory information about the nutritional value of organic and conventional plant products that is currently available."

Professor Charles Benbrook,
one of the authors of the study.

A serving of organic food is equal to two servings of regular

Researchers acknowledge that organic products are so superior to conventional ones that their consumption replaces 1-2 additional servings of fruits and vegetables daily. In other words, eating one organic apple is equivalent to eating three regular apples. This is when comparing the level of antioxidants.

Organic products contain up to 50% less cadmium

A study conducted several years ago by the Food Standards Agency of the United Kingdom gave ambiguous results that there is no significant difference between regular and organic food. The media quickly picked up on the news. Allegedly, consumers spent their money in vain buying organic products, while ordinary ones have the same benefits.

But this study was based on a total of 46 studies comparing agriculture, meat and dairy products. He also lacked the critical data that is now available. Not only are organic foods more nutritious, they are also less contaminated with toxic heavy metals and agricultural pesticides, which are common in conventional products.

This study shows that the choice of foods produced according to organic standards can lead to increased consumption of antioxidants and reduced exposure to toxic heavy metals. This is an important addition to the information available to consumers today, which has so far been confusing and in many cases contradictory.

Professor Carlo Leifert,
leading author of the study.

In a review of the University of Newcastle, scientists found that organic foods contain up to 50 percent less cadmium than regular foods. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ranks cadmium among the 275 most dangerous substances on Earth. It has a detrimental effect on the body through food, inhibits calcium metabolism, causes damage to the kidneys, lungs and can cause autism.

Domestic media are actively discussing the topic of nitrates in conventional and organic products, without mentioning the more important points. Western journalists usually compare the content of pesticides and nutrients, with no mention of nitrates. All because the content of nitrates in food depends primarily on the professionalism of the farmer.

Nitrates are one of the main mineral compounds that plants eat, so they are always in them. The main thing is that the content of nitrates does not exceed the norm, otherwise they can react in the body with the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. It makes no sense to compare the content of nitrates in organic products and in conventional ones. With conscientious farming, nitrates should be normal.

A review published in 2008 included analysis that showed that nitrate levels were lower in organic food. This indicates a higher level of responsibility of organic farmers. Synthetic nitrogen fertilizers (nitrates) are also used in intensive farms, and manure and green manures (green fertilizers - legumes, oats, mustard, etc.) are used in organic farms.

It is important to remember: intensive farming feeds the plant, and organic - the land, paying special attention to humus as an indicator of soil fertility and health.

In addition, it was found that organic products contain significantly fewer traces of pesticides and herbicides. Conventional foods have been found to contain up to four times more of these harmful substances than organic foods. This is a good reason to switch from regular to organic products, even if it turns out to be a bit more expensive.
