Damascus rose is a shrub with a height of up to 2 meters. This plant has green foliage and double pink flowers with a rich aroma.
Extracting oil from rose petals is extremely difficult. The two main methods are: solvent extraction to obtain an absolute, or petal steam distillation to obtain an essential oil. The production of the absolute gives the best yield, but distillation gives a much finer flavor. Rose Otto ("Otto" comes from the Ottoman Empire) is a distilled oil obtained by distilling water or steam from very fresh petals.
The fragility of the petals requires a lot of craftsmanship. Absolute Aromas chose this rose by Otto for its purity and quality. The cultivation of Rose of Damascus dominated Bulgaria during the Ottoman Empire. After World War I, many ethnic Turks from Bulgaria established oil production in the Isparta region of Turkey. Otto's production is still concentrated in these two regions.
